The Government of Lesotho Established the Lesotho Electricity Corporation under the Lesotho Electricity Act 7 of 1969 and it operated as a Government parastal through out the years. The year 2006/07, saw a drastic change in the governance of the Corporation with the establishment of the electricity sector regulator, Lesotho Electricity Authority (LEA), it was imperative to change the legal status of LEC from that of Corporation governed under the Electricity Act 7 of 1969 to being a Proprietary Limited Company, governed under the Companies Act of 1967. The Government of Lesotho remains the sole shareholder of the Lesotho Electricity Company. This means that in terms of the Lesotho Electricity Company (establishment and Vesting Notice 219 of 2006) all assets, liabilities, rights and obligations of the Lesotho Electricity Company, including all rights in land, but excluding the regulatory functions of the said Company, are deemed to vest in the Lesotho Electricity Company ( Proprietary) Limited.
