The management of the Lesotho Electricity
Company (LEC) would like to advise
landlords that the responsibility for all
electrical installations and the meters on
their premises rests with them. In the event
of detection of illegal extraction of
electricity as a result of tampering, or any
illegal activities on the installation, LEC
shall promptly disconnect electricity
supply. Reconnection of supply shall only
be effected upon settlement of all
outstanding amounts either by the tenant or
by the landlord, who has ultimate
responsibility.
Landlords are, therefore, advised to put in
place measures that will minimize the
chances of tampering by their tenants as
such illegal activities, which are normally
unsafe, can cause fires, electrocution and
other serious hazards resulting in damage,
not only to LEC property but to the
landlord’s property as well. In addition to
the routine inspections carried out on
installations by LEC, landlords are advised
to report to LEC, should they suspect any
acts of illegal extraction of electricity.
Upon such reporting LEC shall promptly carry
out inspection, at no charge, and take the
appropriate action.
Please note that the reporting of
illegal consumption to LEC does not absolve
the landlord of his/her responsibility of
ensuring that the tenants do not use
electrical installations/ fittings in the
premises in an illegal manner.
